CfA: The Hertie Visiting Professorship in Jewish Perspectives Within Antisemitism Studies and Research on Contemporary Jewry 2026/27

This newly established position focuses on Jewish perspectives within antisemitism research and the study of contemporary Jewish life. The position is a fixed-term visiting professorship. Remuneration is in accordance with the W3 salary scale. In addition, the successful candidate will receive a one-time travel reimbursement of up to €2,000 to aid in candidate’s relocation to Heidelberg.

The Hertie Visiting Professorship is a collaborative initiative with the Hertie Foundation (Ge-meinnützige Hertie Stiftung). Through its Fund for Antisemitism Prevention and Education the Hertie Foundation supports projects and initiatives dedicated to combating antisemitism and promoting Jewish life in Germany, in addition to its existing commitment. By funding educa-tional and dialogue-based projects, the Hertie Foundation seeks to strengthen civil society and foster tolerance.

Qualifications: In accordance with article 47 of the Baden-Württemberg Higher Education Act (LHG), requirements for this appointment include an outstanding PhD in Jewish Studies or a related discipline, as well as a habilitation or equivalent postdoctoral achievement. Addition-ally, candidates are expected to provide evidence of excellence in higher education teaching.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in English and supervise students at the undergraduate (B.A.) and graduate (M.A.) levels. A particular focus will be advising students within the international M.A. programs “Jewish Civilizations” and “History of Jewish Cultures”.
The visiting professor is also expected to deliver a public lecture during her/his stay. Further-more, a budget of €5,000 is available for the successful candidate to organize a workshop or a small conference.
Desired Areas of Specialization: We particularly welcome applications from scholars whose work complements or expands the current HfJS curriculum. This includes, but is not limited to Contemporary Jewish Studies, Critical Heritage Studies, Musicology, Film Studies or Antisemi-tism Research.

Other Conditions: The appointed professor is expected to reside in Heidelberg or nearby dur-ing the semester. The HfJS stands for equal opportunities and diversity.
