Online Workshop: Mother-tongue and Father-land. Jewish Perspectives on Language and Identity. 23-24 February 2022, Universidad Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona.

23.02.2022 - 24.02.2022

National identities are, by and large, based on the historical correspondence of homeland and language. However, this combination does not apply to diaspora communities, and especially not to Jews, whose identity was rooted for centuries in a displaced homeland and extended to different languages. The Jew who is considered a “guest” of other mother-tongues,
fundamentally challenges the political and philosophical connections between language, identity, nation, and race, and especially the idea of an exclusive national community characterized by a national language and geographical sovereignty. On the occasion of the issue of “Azimuth. Philosophical Coordinates in Modern and Contemporary Thought,” this workshop, organized within the framework of the Marie Sklodowska Curie Project ‘HOME-LANG’ (grant agreement Nº 101027857), will discuss the relationship between homeland, identity, and mother tongue in the context of contemporary Jewish thought.
