Dartmouth College Jewish Studies Program:

Remembering Richard Rubenstein: Reflections on a Life of Scholarship and Theology

On behalf of the Dartmouth College Jewish Studies Program, we invite you to a zoom event commemorating the life and work of the Jewish theologian Professor Richard Rubenstein.

We have asked each member of the panel to speak informally for ten minutes about Prof. Rubenstein and his impact. We will then have an open discussion. It will take place Sunday July 11, 2021, at 12 noon EST. The zoom link is below.

Professors Shaul Magid and Susannah Heschel

Richard Rubenstein (1924-2021) was one of the most important, and underappreciated, Jewish theologians in postwar America. His 1966 book After Auschwitz initiated an entire sub-field of post-Holocaust theology. Over the course of more than half a century, Rubenstein wrote and taught in a variety of disciplines and continued to inspire young scholars interested in questions of Jewish theology and comparative religion. His 1974 autobiography Power Struggle: An Autobiographical Confession is one of the most powerful and compelling autobiographies by an American Jewish thinker in the twentieth century.

In this informal meeting, we will ask a small group of individuals, scholars and non-scholars, who were influenced by Rubenstein, seriously engaged his work, or were his students, to reflect on his life and work, how it has had an impact on them, and where they see his contribution in the coming decades.

Each participant will be asked to limit their remarks to ten minutes and then we will have an open discussion

Date: Sunday July 11, 12-2 pm EST
