Panel - Book Launch: Jews Out of the Question. A Critique of Anti-Anti-Semitism

21.01.2021 | 19:00 - 20:30

Elad Lapidot’s new book (Jews Out of the Question. A Critique of Anti-Anti-Semitism; SUNY Press) provocatively claims that prevalent forms of opposition to anti-Semitism come at the cost of undermining the legitimacy of Judaism.

Through critical readings of philosophers such as Adorno, Horkheimer, Sartre, Arendt, Badiou, and Nancy, the first part of the study reveals how, paradoxically, the opposition to anti-Semitism has generated, in post-Holocaust philosophy, a rejection of Jewish thought.

The second part of the book traces the epistemic roots of modern anti-Semitism by examining the links of race discourse to modern notions of religion, language, history, the nation, and the state in works by Renan, Bauer, Marx, Marr, and Hitler.

The book uses the question of anti-Semitism to intervene in current conversations on politics, truth, and race. It examines the tension between the opposition to racism and the acknowledgment of cultural and epistemic heterogeneity.

The event is organized by the Institut Kirche und Judentum at the Humboldt University of Berlin. We cordially invite you to join us for a vibrant discussion.
